The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)

Broadcast on CBS on 17 November 1978, just over a year after Star Wars became the highest-grossing film in history, this variety special was produced not by Lucasfilm in any creative sense but by Smith-Hemion Productions, a company better known for televised awards shows and musical specials. Steve Binder directed, a veteran of TV variety whose credits included the celebrated 1968 Elvis comeback special, though nothing in that background quite prepared anyone for what this turned out to be. George Lucas has since made no secret of his feelings about it, reportedly saying he would destroy every copy if he could. The principal cast returned, though their involvement was clearly contractual rather than enthusiastic, and the special has never received an official home video release of any kind.
