History of the World in Three Minutes Flat (1980)
★★ — History of the World in Three Minutes Flat (1980)
A short animated film from Canadian filmmaker Michael Mills, who spent much of his career producing educational and satirical shorts for the National Film Board of Canada (the NFB being one of the more reliable incubators of this kind of compressed, concept-driven animation through the 1970s and 80s). Mills had previously won an Academy Award for his 1970 NFB short Evolution, another piece concerned with squeezing vast biological timescales into a few minutes of screen time, so History of the World in Three Minutes Flat sits very much in that established groove for him. The film was produced independently through his own company rather than directly under the NFB banner, keeping it a modest, self-contained exercise in condensed storytelling rather than any kind of major production.
