There's something genuinely exciting happening in South Asian cinema right now, and Fawzia Mirza's The Queen of My Dreams sits right in the middle of it. I came to this one hot on the heels of watching Joyland, another film that had me completely gripped, and

There's a street in Plymouth, Montserrat, buried under metres of volcanic ash and debris, where you can still make out the rooftops of houses that were someone's home. That image stays with you long after the credits roll on Ben Fogle and the Buried City, and

There's a shot early in A Bittersweet Life where the camera simply holds on the protagonist, standing in the rain outside a restaurant, suit immaculate, face unreadable. Nothing is said. Nothing needs to be. Kim Jee-woon is already telling you everything about this man, his world, and

There's a particular kind of admiration you can have for a film that sits completely apart from actually enjoying it. That tension is exactly where I spent most of my time with Ritwik Ghatak's A River Called Titas, a film I watched as part of my

Two sisters. One mosquito net. Something outside that wants in. That's all Moshari needs, and the fact that it pulls off what it pulls off in the space of a short film is genuinely impressive. I quite enjoyed this one, and I think if you give it ten

There are films you see at the right moment in your life that hit like a thunderclap, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was exactly that for me. I was a wide-eyed teenager picking up what felt like a "decent" rental, and what I got was something closer

There's a moment early in Ema where the camera just sits with its subject as she moves through a neon-lit Santiago street, reggaeton thumping beneath her, and you realise you're not going to be given any easy way into this woman. She's magnetic

There's a moment in The 39 Steps where Robert Donat finds himself handcuffed to Madeleine Carroll and the pair have to navigate a Scottish hillside together, bickering and stumbling, and it's genuinely charming. It's also the moment that best captures what this film is:

There's a moment in Fast Five where two cars drag an enormous steel vault through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, flattening police vehicles like tin cans and carving a path of gleeful destruction through the city, and I remember sitting there thinking: yes. This is exactly what
