American cinema stretches from the silent comedies of Buster Keaton, The Cameraman among them, through to the sharp, funny indie work of films like Booksmart. It's a tradition wide enough to hold big-studio spectacle, low-budget horror, and everything in between. Browse Macca's reviews below.

There's a version of this film that would've been one of the best horror pictures in years. Guillermo del Toro taking on Frankenstein, with a cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, Lars Mikkelsen and Mia Goth, shot through with his trademark gothic grandeur? On paper,

Right out of the gate, Jeymes Samuel's Western announces itself as something genuinely different, and I was hooked before the opening titles had finished. The premise alone is enough to sit up and pay attention: an all-Black outlaw gang riding through the Old West, chasing revenge and

There's a particular kind of frustration that comes from watching a film fumble a genuinely great idea, and The Pod Generation had me feeling that frustration almost from the first frame. The premise is properly interesting: in the near future, couples can carry their baby in a detachable

Will Smith is one of the most frustrating actors working today, and I mean that in the most conflicted way possible. The man is either absolutely brilliant or completely terrible, with very little middle ground in between. I've felt that watching Hancock, I've felt it watching

There's a particular kind of dread that comes from watching something go horribly wrong on live television. Late Night with the Devil, directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, understands that completely, and it weaponises it to genuinely unsettling effect. I went in completely blind, as I always try

Look, I'm not going to pretend Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a good film. It isn't. But here's the thing I keep coming back to: it's a better film than I thought it would be, and that counts for something. Not

Sometimes a film feels like it's standing right at the edge of a cliff, ready to jump, and then it just... doesn't. That's Murina in a nutshell. It's a sun-scorched, salt-sprayed Croatian drama with every ingredient you'd want,

There's a particular kind of frustration that comes with watching a film that looks absolutely stunning and does almost nothing worthwhile with it. That's Transformers One in a nutshell. Directed by Josh Cooley, it is, without question, a visual feast. The animation is gorgeous, bringing the

Here's the thing about Starsky & Hutch: it was never going to be a surprise. The moment you clock that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are your leads, you already know exactly the film you're walking into. And look, I don't mean that as

There's a certain kind of cinema that doesn't just ask you to suspend your disbelief. It grabs you by the collar and drags you headfirst into the chaos. Hardcore Henry is exactly that kind of film, and from the very first frame, it makes absolutely no

There's a version of Anaconda that works. A giant snake, a panicked crew trapped on a river boat in the Amazon, a scenery-chewing villain, and a cast you'd never expect to share a screen together. That's a recipe for a genuinely enjoyable B-

Sometimes you put a film on for the kids and you end up genuinely enjoying it yourself. That's exactly what happened with Trolls. I wasn't expecting much beyond keeping the little ones occupied for ninety minutes, and instead I found myself tapping my foot and laughing
