There's a moment about halfway through Personal Shopper where Kristen Stewart's character sits alone on a train, exchanging cryptic text messages with an unknown sender, and the film genuinely crackles with unease. It's tense, it's modern, it's quietly terrifying in

Forget Indiana Jones. Forget every Hollywood adventure where an ancient Egyptian tomb exists purely as a puzzle box for some square-jawed foreigner to crack open. If you want to understand the real human story behind those extraordinary discoveries, the guilt, the compromise, the impossible weight of deciding who a

There's something almost perverse about how appealing Pawo Choyning Dorji makes exile look. The premise of Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom sounds, on paper, like a punishment: a young, ambitious teacher yanked away from his city life and dispatched to what is reportedly the most remote school

There's a distinct, sun-drenched charm to the 16mm aesthetic of 1970s cinema, and Pim de la Parra's 1976 drama One People captures that era's visual texture about as well as anything I've seen from the period. I have a real soft

There is a very specific moment early in Crumbs where a supposed alien artefact is dramatically revealed, and I'm fairly certain it's just a repainted plastic water pistol. I couldn't tell you whether Miguel Llansó intended that as a joke, a statement, or simply

Some of my wife's family hails from Cambodia, so I've heard my fair share of harrowing stories about the Khmer Rouge over the years. Those conversations, shared around kitchen tables and over family dinners, are heavy in a way that's hard to articulate. And

There's a particular kind of pressure that comes with sitting down to watch a film that half your friends have handed a perfect score. Scrolling through Letterboxd and seeing Elem Klimov's 1985 war epic sitting proudly as one of the highest-rated films of all time,

There is something profoundly absurd about standing before the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Colosseum, or the Louvre, monuments that have survived millennia of human history, only to watch hundreds of people experience them exclusively through the glowing rectangle of a smartphone on a selfie stick. It is one of

There are only nine films in Letterboxd's entire catalogue for Dominica. Nine. And apparently Nom Tèw is the most popular of the lot. That, more than anything else I could tell you, sets the scene for what kind of watch this is. I've been working my

There's a very specific, undeniable magic to the moment the needle drops on a classic Trojan Records compilation. That warm crackle, the skank of the rhythm guitar, the brass punching through. Nicolas Jack Davies's 2018 documentary Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records captures that exact frequency,

I went into this one buzzing with anticipation. As a massive fan of Snowfall and someone who's spent a fair amount of time reading and watching around the American crack cocaine epidemic, I was primed. The promise of a documentary tackling how that drug hollowed out communities, shaped
