I'll hold my hands up straight away: I'm not the biggest fan of the modern superhero industrial complex. There's a formula, and almost everybody sticks rigidly to it. You get your quippy hero, your globe-trotting set pieces, and then, inevitably, a third act

The words "Directed by Orson Welles" appear on screen, and something shifts in you. You sit up a little straighter. You prepare yourself. This is the man who made The Third Man producer Carol Reed look over his shoulder, the man who redefined what a film could even

There's a version of The Red Turtle that I think I could love. The version that exists purely as a sequence of images, a moving watercolour book you'd leave open on a coffee table and let wash over you. Michael Dudok de Wit has made something

There's a very specific, nostalgic charm to the final gasps of traditional 2D animation at Disney, right before the studio completely surrendered to the CGI takeover. Something bittersweet hangs over these late entries in the hand-drawn era, a sense that you're watching a craft at

I'll be honest with you: silent cinema and I have never been the best of mates. Too often I find the pacing drags, and the absence of dialogue puts up a wall between me and genuine emotional engagement. That said, there are certain names that demand your respect

There's a specific, sun-drenched haze to Bruce Robinson's adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary, and unfortunately it mostly just obscures a deeply average film. You sit there watching the warm Puerto Rican light bounce off rum bottles and white beaches, and

I'll be honest: learning that Blondes in the Jungle is considered one of the most popular films ever to come out of Honduras left me completely baffled. I genuinely had to read that twice. Because if this is what earns regional acclaim, I can only imagine what the

There is a moment in Hacksaw Ridge where a soldier casually picks up half a dismembered torso and uses it as a makeshift shield before sprinting forward and mowing down enemy troops with a light machine gun held in just one hand. I had to pause. I genuinely had to

When a film sits in Letterboxd's top 250 animations of all time, you go in expecting something. A hidden gem, maybe. A stroke of forgotten genius that somehow slipped past you in childhood. So I finally ticked off Kevin Lima's A Goofy Movie, fully prepared to

The reputation arrives before the film does. You hear "Bloodsport" and you picture Van Damme in his prime, doing the splits between two chairs, Bolo Yeung thumping his own chest like a man possessed, and a tournament so brutal and underground it makes the UFC look like a
