American cinema stretches from the silent comedies of Buster Keaton, The Cameraman among them, through to the sharp, funny indie work of films like Booksmart. It's a tradition wide enough to hold big-studio spectacle, low-budget horror, and everything in between. Browse Macca's reviews below.

Some films you watch for yourself. Some films you watch with your kids, and you end up rediscovering something you didn't even know you'd lost. Sitting down with the little ones to watch James Frawley's The Muppet Movie, I wasn't expecting to

I'll be honest with you: I came to Hellraiser embarrassingly late. I've sat through the undisputed heavyweights over the years, the Nightmare on Elm Street films, Halloween, the Friday the 13th series, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre pictures, all of them. And yet somehow, Clive Barker'

Batman Forever is a weird one. There's no getting around it. Joel Schumacher's 1995 outing represents such a massive tonal departure from the brooding, gothic pictures Tim Burton gave us that you almost feel like you've wandered into a completely different franchise. Gone is

There's a moment in Lost in Paradise when actual pirates show up, and honestly, that tells you everything you need to know about this film. You're settled in, you've got your tea, you've accepted the cosy, predictable rhythm of a stranded-on-

There's a moment in Monterey Pop where you stop thinking about the camera, stop thinking about the era, stop thinking about anything really, and you just feel it. D. A. Pennebaker had a gift for that. He didn't announce himself, didn't impose a grand

There's a version of Batman Returns that could've been one of the great superhero films. Tim Burton, coming off the back of his brilliant 1989 original, reunited with Michael Keaton and went darker, weirder, stranger. All the ingredients are there. And yet, sitting down to rewatch

I went into I, Tonya fully expecting to be mildly entertained by a straightforward ice-skating biopic and mildly bored by the bits in between. I was only a toddler when the Nancy Kerrigan incident was dominating global headlines, so my knowledge going in amounted to little more than a

Let me be completely straight with you: if you've already sat through Paradise Z, also released under the title Two of Us, then you have already seen Dead Earth. Every single frame of it. This is not a reimagining, not a director's cut, not a fresh

There's a moment in Joy Ride where a voice crackles out of a CB radio and the temperature in the car drops ten degrees. You don't see a face. You don't get a backstory. You just get Ted Levine, all gravel and quiet menace,

There's a scene early in Capernaum that sets the tone for everything that follows: a hardened, streetwise twelve-year-old boy, sitting in a courtroom, announcing that he is suing his own parents for bringing him into the world. It's one of the most staggering opening

Let me get this out of the way upfront: yes, The Last Samurai is Americanised. Brazenly, unapologetically, Hollywood-to-its-bones Americanised. And I'm not going to pretend otherwise, because that would be dishonest. The sweeping orchestral score, the larger-than-life heroics, the Western outsider who arrives

There's a moment early in The Suicide Squad where a group of genuinely terrible people are dropped onto a beach and almost immediately torn to shreds, and it sets the tone perfectly. James Gunn is not messing about. This is loud, bloody, irreverent, and thoroughly committed to its
