The Migrant Survivor (2023)

A short documentary from Gambian filmmaker Lamin L. Sanyang, this twelve-minute film sits within a broader wave of grassroots African cinema that has grown alongside cheaper digital production tools, allowing stories that would otherwise go untold to reach international festival and streaming audiences. The subject matter, the so-called "backway" route taken by West African migrants attempting the overland and sea crossing to Europe via Mauritania and the Canary Islands, is a genuine and ongoing humanitarian crisis, with the stretch of Atlantic coastline off Mauritania among the most dangerous migration passages in the world. Sanyang's film draws on a real survivor account, giving it the texture of testimony rather than fiction.

A-Z World Movie Challenge Gambia First review on letterboxd! This documentary was a tragic tale. One man attempted to leave the poverty of the Gambia on an illegal migrant ship, which in fact looked like it was a tiny little vessel. It capsized and many died, including his best friend. Now he tells the story, interview style. It's super basic, very short but still an interesting glimpse into Gambian life. Check out this dudes crazy long thumb nails too
