Released on Disney+ in January 2022, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild is the sixth instalment in the long-running Ice Age franchise (the first having arrived back in 2002) and the first produced without Blue Sky Studios, which Disney shuttered in 2021 shortly after acquiring Fox. Production fell to Bardel Entertainment, a Canadian animation house better known for television work, making this something of a budget step-down from the theatrical entries. John C. Donkin, a veteran producer on several Blue Sky titles, stepped into the director's chair here for his debut feature. Simon Pegg reprises Buck Wild, the role he inherited from Simon Pegg's predecessor on the character, having first taken it over for Ice Age: Collision Course in 2016.
This isn’t just bad, it’s budget-less, soulless, and feels like a direct-to-streaming cash-in made by interns using a screensaver and a dream. The animation looks like it melted. The jokes are non-existent or painfully forced. The plot is two annoying teens (I mean, honey badgers) run around doing dumb stuff while Buck tries (and fails) to make it interesting. My kid loved Buck, so of course we watched it. But now I have to live with what I’ve done.
