Horror has always done its best work at the edges, where unease creeps in before anything jumps out. From the expressionist dread of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to Kubrick stretching psychology to breaking point in The Shining, the genre earns serious respect when it treats fear as a way of examining how we actually live. Few things in a thriller satisfy quite like being unable to guess what comes next, and A Tale of Two Sisters kept me wrong-footed almost the whole way through. I'd settle into what felt like a firm theory, the pieces seeming to click into place, and then

Every so often a film comes along that dares you to describe it with a straight face. The Boxer's Omen is firmly one of them. Try explaining it to someone at a party and watch their expression shift from polite interest to genuine concern for your wellbeing. A

To most horror fans, the name Lucio Fulci means one thing: gore, and buckets of it. The splatter operas of his later career earned him the "Godfather of Gore" billing that still defines his reputation, and if you want to see what that looks like in full swing,

The marketing for I Saw the TV Glow is doing nobody any favours. I came in braced for horror, primed for dread, and found something else entirely: a slow, melancholy, dreamlike film about identity and dissociation that uses the language of late-night television and adolescent longing to ask some

There is a special circle of cinema reserved for the truly botched video-game adaptation, and its patron saint is Uwe Boll, the man who gave us the immortal catastrophe of House of the Dead, still one of the worst films I have ever sat through. I bring him up

Not so long ago I sat through a zombie comedy that was so busy cracking jokes it forgot zombies were supposed to be scary. That film left me cold. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is the direct antidote to that problem, and a neat little lesson in getting the

For a debut feature, Talk to Me arrives with an almost indecent confidence. There is a moment early on, as a crowded room of teenagers passes around an embalmed severed hand and queues up to let something dead climb inside them for ninety seconds, where you realise the Philippou brothers

There's a particular kind of dread that comes with revisiting a film you loved as a teenager. You build it up over the years, smooth out its rough edges in memory, and then sit down to watch it again with the nagging suspicion that you're about

I could not have gone into Queens of the Dead wanting to like it more. George A. Romero is one of my most-watched directors, full stop, and his Day of the Dead remains the only horror film I have ever handed a full five stars. So when I learned

My sister was physically sick watching this. Not metaphorically. Not "she felt a bit queasy." She threw up, right there on the living-room floor, in front of the telly, in the middle of a children's film. I have carried that image with me for decades,
