The 2000s were defined by franchise ambition and digital transformation, with studios betting big on serialised spectacle while world cinema found new urgency in films like City of God. It was a decade that rewarded patience, building stories across years and sequels. See what Macca made of it all in the reviews below.

I'll be upfront: I went into this one already rattled. I absolutely loathed Before Sunrise, the 1995 original, where two insufferably wide-eyed twenty-somethings wander around Vienna trying to extract grand philosophical meaning from every stray dog and overheard conversation. It was a complete chore. So when

There's a version of watching The Heart of the World where you sit back, jaw slightly open, genuinely dazzled by what Guy Maddin has pulled off in six frantic minutes. And then there's the version where you resurface afterwards, blinking, and wonder what on earth you

Let me be straight with you: I hated this. And I say that as someone who went in already bracing for a rough time, because Peter Tscherkassky's Instructions for a Light and Sound Machine takes its raw material from one of the greatest films ever made, The Good,

There is a very specific, unapologetically loud energy to the comedy of the early 2000s, and Keenen Ivory Wayans's Scary Movie kicks the door off its hinges right from the opening frames. It is crass, it is relentless, and it has absolutely no interest in your good taste.

I'll be straight with you: avant-garde cinema and I have never really got on. It's not a prejudice I'm particularly proud of, but it's an honest one. So when I sat down with Robert Breer's 2003 experimental short What

Most time-travel films are essentially flashy, convoluted messes that rely on a massive CGI budget to paper over their narrative plot holes. So when I sat down to watch Shane Carruth's 2004 indie mind-bender, I was bracing myself for something in the vein of The Butterfly

Grief is one of the hardest things to put on film. Not because emotion resists the camera, but because the temptation to sentimentalise, to over-explain, to reach for easy catharsis, is almost irresistible. Jean-Marie Straub resists all of that in Artemide's Knee, a short film made

I'll be honest with you: I went into La Morte Rouge fully expecting to be floored. Víctor Erice is a legendary name, this short sits on the "They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?" list of the top 1000 films of the 21st century, and I

There's a particular kind of embarrassment that comes from rewatching a film you once championed and realising, quietly, that the years have not been kind to it. Casshern is that film for me. Back around its original 2004 release, I was absolutely floored by it. A comic book

There are only nine films in Letterboxd's entire catalogue for Dominica. Nine. And apparently Nom Tèw is the most popular of the lot. That, more than anything else I could tell you, sets the scene for what kind of watch this is. I've been working my

There's something genuinely rare about a horror film that gets under your skin on a rewatch just as much as it did the first time. I came back to Gore Verbinski's 2002 remake of The Ring recently, and I came away reminded of exactly why this

There's a moment in Wasp where you realise you're holding your breath, not because anything explosive is happening on screen, but because the tension of everyday poverty is so authentically rendered that you're bracing for something terrible to arrive at any second. Andrea Arnold&
