Down from the Mountain (2000)

D. A. Pennebaker was already a documentary institution by 2000, having made his name with "Don't Look Back" (Bob Dylan, 1967) and "Monterey Pop" (1968), and this concert film gave him a project that suited his strengths perfectly. The Coen Brothers commissioned it as a companion piece to their "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, an album of old-time, bluegrass and gospel that had been assembled by producer T Bone Burnett and had caught the brothers entirely off guard with its commercial momentum. The concert itself took place on 24 May 2000 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, a venue with the kind of history that makes the room itself feel like a participant, and the lineup brought together performers from across several generations of American roots music.

It's just so beautiful to see Emmylou Harris footage
