Mystery cinema earns its keep by making the audience complicit: you piece together clues alongside the detective, or realise too late you were misreading everything. Hitchcock understood this better than anyone, and films like Rear Window and Vertigo remain the genre's gold standard for psychological unease done with precision. If you've spent many hours scaling treacherous cliffs and picking through ancient ruins in the Uncharted video game series like I have, sitting down to Ruben Fleischer's 2022 film adaptation feels less like a cinematic reunion and more like a profound betrayal. That's not

You don't just watch Midsommar. You get bludgeoned by it. From the very first frames, Ari Aster is coming for your senses with a relentless, sun-drenched assault that refuses to let you look away, even when every instinct is telling you to. And it starts with something

Brian De Palma had me from the very beginning. Not the beginning of his career, mind you, but the beginning of Sisters, a 1972 film I came to surprisingly late and with surprisingly little foreknowledge. The opening scenes hook you with a deceptively simple premise and then tighten the grip,

There's a version of this review where I open with genuine respect for the avant-garde tradition, tip my hat to the academics, and ease you gently into my reservations. But honestly? Twenty minutes of a bloke cutting up someone else's footage and slowing it down

There's a moment about halfway through Personal Shopper where Kristen Stewart's character sits alone on a train, exchanging cryptic text messages with an unknown sender, and the film genuinely crackles with unease. It's tense, it's modern, it's quietly terrifying in

If you've seen one supernatural slasher, you've essentially seen them all, and Whistle is unlikely to change your mind on that front. Corin Hardy's 2025 picture feels like someone took the Rube Goldberg mortality mechanics of Final Destination, mashed them up with the urban

There's something genuinely rare about a horror film that gets under your skin on a rewatch just as much as it did the first time. I came back to Gore Verbinski's 2002 remake of The Ring recently, and I came away reminded of exactly why this

There's a moment early in It Was Just an Accident where you catch yourself laughing, and then almost immediately feel guilty for it. That tonal shift, from dry, deadpan comedy to something far darker and more suffocating, is exactly what Jafar Panahi pulls off in his 2025 film,

There's a moment in Joy Ride where a voice crackles out of a CB radio and the temperature in the car drops ten degrees. You don't see a face. You don't get a backstory. You just get Ted Levine, all gravel and quiet menace,

I've seen just about every version of The Mummy that cinema has thrown at the world. The atmospheric eeriness of the Boris Karloff original, the brilliantly goofy, globe-trotting adventures of Brendan Fraser, and yes, even the ill-fated Tom Cruise reboot that nobody asked for and nobody

Three minutes. That's all Luigi asks of you. Three minutes, and in return it gives you a hand, a brush, a canvas, and then nothing. No narration, no interview, no context about who Saint Lucian artist Luigi St. Omer is or why his work matters. And crucially, no

There's a moment early in Memoria where Tilda Swinton's character jolts awake at a sound nobody else seems to hear, a deep, resonant thud that comes from nowhere and goes nowhere, and I genuinely wasn't sure what kind of film I was watching. Horror?
