American cinema stretches from the silent comedies of Buster Keaton, The Cameraman among them, through to the sharp, funny indie work of films like Booksmart. It's a tradition wide enough to hold big-studio spectacle, low-budget horror, and everything in between. Browse Macca's reviews below.

Kieran Culkin is magnetic in this film. Whatever scene he's in, whatever he's doing, you simply cannot look away from him. That's a good thing, because A Real Pain pretty much lives or dies by whether you buy into his performance, and he more

There's a particular kind of chill that comes from watching a decades-old film and realising it was right. Not in a vague, hand-wavy way, but in sharp, specific, uncomfortable detail. That's exactly what watching THX 1138 today feels like. George Lucas's 1971

Some documentaries inform you. The best ones change you. Jaha's Promise belongs firmly in that second category. I came away from it heartbroken, furious, and genuinely inspired, sometimes all three at once, and that emotional complexity is exactly what separates a truly vital piece of documentary filmmaking from

There are some films you feel like you already know before you've even sat down to watch them, and Disney's Cinderella is the textbook example of that. The rags-to-riches fairy tale, the glass slipper, the pumpkin carriage, the wicked stepmother, and that Fairy Godmother

There's a moment early in Memoria where Tilda Swinton's character jolts awake at a sound nobody else seems to hear, a deep, resonant thud that comes from nowhere and goes nowhere, and I genuinely wasn't sure what kind of film I was watching. Horror?

There's a moment in They Will Kill You that I keep coming back to. The screen goes almost completely black, and all you can see is a flaming axe carving through the darkness, each swing briefly illuminating a fight in bloody, flickering flashes. It's properly spectacular,

Three films in, and I'm starting to think Evil Dead and I are just not meant for each other. I went into Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise having already sat through both the original and Evil Dead II, neither of which exactly set my world on

There's a moment in Elephant where everything changes. You've spent the best part of half an hour just watching teenagers go about their day. Someone's late for school. Someone else is taking photographs. The rhythms are slow, unhurried, almost meditative. And then a character

My fiancée absolutely loves this film. It sits near the very top of her all-time favourites list, and so I went into it with a certain amount of pressure to feel the same way. I didn't, quite, but I can absolutely see what she sees in it,

There's a moment watching Grand Prix where you stop thinking about cinema entirely and just grip the armrest. John Frankenheimer mounted cameras directly onto the cars, put you inside the cockpit, and suddenly you're not sitting in a darkened room anymore. You're hurtling around

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but here we go: I genuinely like Barbie. I, a 37-year-old man, sat down, watched it, and came out the other side having had a proper good time. I even quite like Ken, which is a
