American cinema stretches from the silent comedies of Buster Keaton, The Cameraman among them, through to the sharp, funny indie work of films like Booksmart. It's a tradition wide enough to hold big-studio spectacle, low-budget horror, and everything in between. Browse Macca's reviews below.

There's a very specific kind of stupid that takes real commitment to pull off, and Zoolander is absolutely committed to it. Ben Stiller plays Derek Zoolander, a male model so catastrophically dim he makes a career out of a single facial expression, and the film around him is

There is a specific, suffocating tension to the opening sequence of Leigh Whannell's 2020 reimagining of The Invisible Man that had me genuinely on the edge of my seat. Watching Cecilia, played by a brilliant Elisabeth Moss, execute a breathless, nail-biting escape from the sprawling, high-tech

You know the feeling. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon, you're half-awake on the sofa, and you flick through the channels until you land on something that demands absolutely nothing from you: a perfectly harmless, aggressively middle-of-the-road war picture playing out in faded

I still remember the sheer surprise of John Wick dropping out of nowhere in 2014. There was no real warning, no relentless marketing campaign hammering you into submission. It just arrived, and within about fifteen minutes I was completely hooked. The reason is pretty simple: it didn't pretend

Two Jean-Claude Van Dammes do not, in fact, make a right. That is the hard-won conclusion I arrived at somewhere around the midpoint of Double Impact, a 1991 action vehicle built on a premise so wonderfully absurd that you have to admire the sheer, unadulterated audacity of it.

There's a moment in Raj Patel and Zak Piper's documentary where you see it written all over the faces of the Malawian delegates: a quiet, devastating shock. They've travelled from one of the poorest nations on earth to the supposed richest country in the

I'll be honest: learning that Blondes in the Jungle is considered one of the most popular films ever to come out of Honduras left me completely baffled. I genuinely had to read that twice. Because if this is what earns regional acclaim, I can only imagine what the

You don't just watch Midsommar. You get bludgeoned by it. From the very first frames, Ari Aster is coming for your senses with a relentless, sun-drenched assault that refuses to let you look away, even when every instinct is telling you to. And it starts with something

There's a moment watching this film where you have to stop and remind yourself that what you're seeing is not fiction. An entire community on a tiny island in Vanuatu, genuinely, fervently waiting for a white American soldier called John Frum to descend from the sky

There is a moment in Hacksaw Ridge where a soldier casually picks up half a dismembered torso and uses it as a makeshift shield before sprinting forward and mowing down enemy troops with a light machine gun held in just one hand. I had to pause. I genuinely had to

When a film sits in Letterboxd's top 250 animations of all time, you go in expecting something. A hidden gem, maybe. A stroke of forgotten genius that somehow slipped past you in childhood. So I finally ticked off Kevin Lima's A Goofy Movie, fully prepared to

There is a special kind of cynicism reserved for streaming cash-grabs, and John R. Leonetti's 2019 creature feature The Silence truly takes the biscuit. It is, without exaggeration, essentially a poor, straight-to-streaming tribute act to A Quiet Place. They even threw in a deaf child
