Melody of Change (2019)
★★ — Melody of Change (2019)
Melody of Change is a short film running just under twenty minutes, produced through Malao Studios and co-directed by Ka Xiong and Cyril Eberle, a pairing that brings together Lao and Western filmmaking perspectives. Shot on location in the villages of Northern Laos, the film centres on the Khmu and Hmong communities, two distinct ethnic groups with their own musical traditions, and uses that cultural friction as its dramatic engine. Short-form co-productions rooted in Southeast Asian indigenous culture remain comparatively rare, and a Lao production finding any international festival circulation at all is notable given how modestly developed the country's film industry remains. Neither Xiong nor Eberle has a substantial prior filmography in wide circulation.
A-Z World Movie Tour Laos 1ST REVIEW ON LETTERBOXD This short is a showcase of various traditional music styles in two communities in Laos. The central character (Hongfa) is the bridge between these communities. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, picture quality is great and the score, being the focus, is really nice. That being said... it does kind of fall down a little bit because there's very little actual substance here. There's no real story. It's just music and locations. It's not "bad" per se... it's just lacking depth.
