Hungry (2026)
Hungry, Brianna Lee's short film, is a lean and nasty little horror piece that gets a surprising amount of blood on the screen in a very short space of time. It is the first of her Halloween Nights shorts I worked through, and while it is far too brief to judge as a full story, it is a decent, visceral calling card. Three stars.
I will keep this one deliberately light on detail, because at five minutes almost anything counts as a spoiler and this is a film that works best cold. It opens on Lee's character in a desperate, bloody predicament out in the woods, and from there it becomes a primal, stripped-back study in survival and instinct, the kind of short that trusts a strong premise and a committed performance to do the talking rather than any great tangle of plot. Where it goes, I will leave for you to discover.
What I can happily praise is the craft. The practical effects are genuinely good for a short at this level, tactile and hand-made in a way digital trickery rarely matches, and Lee commits fully to the raw physicality the role demands. There is a feral energy to the whole thing that carries you through its brief running time, and a real relish for getting messy that horror fans will appreciate.
Three stars, and that is really a case of scoring the potential as much as the piece, because at this length it is more a sharp, bloody vignette than a story you can fully sink your teeth into. But as a demonstration of practical-effects craft and fearless performance, Hungry does exactly what a good Halloween short should: it gets in, unsettles you, and leaves you wanting a little more.
