There's a moment in A Chinese Ghost Story where you sit back, squint at the screen and think, "What the hell am I actually watching?" And then you grin. Because whatever it is, it's brilliant. Tony Ching Siu-Tung's 1987 cult classic

Brian De Palma had me from the very beginning. Not the beginning of his career, mind you, but the beginning of Sisters, a 1972 film I came to surprisingly late and with surprisingly little foreknowledge. The opening scenes hook you with a deceptively simple premise and then tighten the grip,

As the father of a twelve-year-old girl, I'm not sure I could have picked a more personally confronting watch than Saulė Bliuvaitė's Toxic. From its opening frames, it had me sitting forward in my seat with that particular kind of unease you can'

Twenty-ninth highest-rated film of all time on Letterboxd. Let that sink in for a moment. That is the weight I Am Cuba carries before you have even pressed play, and it is, frankly, an impossible burden for any film to shoulder. I went in expecting something close to

Forget Indiana Jones. Forget every Hollywood adventure where an ancient Egyptian tomb exists purely as a puzzle box for some square-jawed foreigner to crack open. Everyone was talking about Saltburn when it landed, and honestly, I get it. Emerald Fennell's psychological thriller is the kind of film that burrows under your skin and refuses to let go, even when, maybe especially when, it's doing things you find completely daft. I came

Some films hit you like a fist. Soleil O is one of them. Med Hondo's 1970 debut feature follows an educated man from Mauritania who arrives in Paris with every reason to believe in the promise of the colonial "motherland," only to find door after door
