Horror has always done its best work at the edges, where unease creeps in before anything jumps out. From the expressionist dread of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to Kubrick stretching psychology to breaking point in The Shining, the genre earns serious respect when it treats fear as a way of examining how we actually live. There's something genuinely rare about a horror film that gets under your skin on a rewatch just as much as it did the first time. I came back to Gore Verbinski's 2002 remake of The Ring recently, and I came away reminded of exactly why this

Here's a confession that probably undermines any claim I have to serious horror credibility: I watched Gore Verbinski's American remake of The Ring years before I ever sat down with Hideo Nakata's original. The remake absolutely terrified me at the time, burrowed deep into

The trailer sold me a lie. A tight, claustrophobic sci-fi thriller, bodies turning against their owners, paranoia spreading floor by floor through a sealed apartment block. Something in the vein of The Crazies, maybe, or Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I sat down fully braced for that film. What

There are films you admire enormously and films you love, and sometimes those two things refuse to overlap. Phil Tippett's Mad God sits squarely in the first category for me, and I've been wrestling with that ever since the credits rolled. It is, without any doubt

I'll be honest with you: I came to Hellraiser embarrassingly late. I've sat through the undisputed heavyweights over the years, the Nightmare on Elm Street films, Halloween, the Friday the 13th series, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre pictures, all of them. And yet somehow, Clive Barker'

Let me be completely straight with you: if you've already sat through Paradise Z, also released under the title Two of Us, then you have already seen Dead Earth. Every single frame of it. This is not a reimagining, not a director's cut, not a fresh

I've seen just about every version of The Mummy that cinema has thrown at the world. The atmospheric eeriness of the Boris Karloff original, the brilliantly goofy, globe-trotting adventures of Brendan Fraser, and yes, even the ill-fated Tom Cruise reboot that nobody asked for and nobody

There are films you watch and forget by the following morning, and there are films that crawl under your skin and refuse to leave. Obsession is very much the latter. I went in completely blind, which I'd strongly urge you to do as well, because the experience is

There's a moment in They Will Kill You that I keep coming back to. The screen goes almost completely black, and all you can see is a flaming axe carving through the darkness, each swing briefly illuminating a fight in bloody, flickering flashes. It's properly spectacular,

Three films in, and I'm starting to think Evil Dead and I are just not meant for each other. I went into Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise having already sat through both the original and Evil Dead II, neither of which exactly set my world on

The premise sounds corny, I'll be straight with you. A djinn unleashed by a missile strike into a Tehran apartment block during the Iran-Iraq War. On paper, that reads like the kind of horror concept you might pitch as a joke. But Babak Anvari's Under

There's a version of this film that would've been one of the best horror pictures in years. Guillermo del Toro taking on Frankenstein, with a cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, Lars Mikkelsen and Mia Goth, shot through with his trademark gothic grandeur? On paper,
