Comedy at its best does more than raise a laugh: Billy Wilder proved as much with The Apartment, a film that wrings genuine heartache from office farce without losing its wit for a second. The genre rewards close attention, and Macca's reviews treat it with exactly that. Browse the collection below.

There's a moment near the start of The Watermelon Woman where the camera just lingers on the inside of a video rental shop, and I felt it land somewhere in my chest before a single plot point had been established. The rows of VHS cases, the counter, the

The Great Escape, but with chickens. I'll be honest: that is not a bad pitch at all. And in the hands of Aardman, the studio that built its reputation on meticulous, lovingly hand-crafted stop-motion, it should be an absolute home run. The result is good. It

There is a nine-year-old girl in the first story of The Day I Became a Woman who has until noon. That is her deadline. Once the sun hits its highest point on her birthday, she will officially be a woman, and she will never be allowed to play

The most baffling thing about Magicians is what it does with the two people it hired to carry the whole thing. David Mitchell and Robert Webb, Peep Show royalty and one of the sharpest comedy pairings British television has produced in years, are kept apart for the bulk of the

I came to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang blind, as I like to, having spotted it on the "They Shoot Pictures, Don't They" list of the century's best films. For a while, I genuinely thought I understood the fuss. It opens strongly. I warmed to

There's a quiet melancholy beneath the surface of Lilo & Stitch that I wasn't quite expecting when I first sat down with it, and it's that melancholy that lingers long after the credits roll. Not the big, showy emotional beats that Disney tends to

There are films you remember seeing as a kid where you can still feel the exact sensation of watching them for the first time. Aladdin is one of those. The magic carpet soaring over the clouds, the Cave of Wonders roaring to life, and then Robin Williams opening his mouth

Blame the algorithm. Tina Romero's Queens of the Dead had just finished, I was already in a zombie mood with my critical faculties suitably loosened, and before I'd even reached for the remote the next thing had started playing. That next thing was The Video Dead,

(500) Days of Summer opens by telling you, in as many words, that it is "not a love story, but a story about love." That is true, as far as it goes, but I would argue the framing is still a little off: this is a story about
