The 2000s were defined by franchise ambition and digital transformation, with studios betting big on serialised spectacle while world cinema found new urgency in films like City of God. It was a decade that rewarded patience, building stories across years and sequels. See what Macca made of it all in the reviews below.

I came to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang blind, as I like to, having spotted it on the "They Shoot Pictures, Don't They" list of the century's best films. For a while, I genuinely thought I understood the fuss. It opens strongly. I warmed to

You have seen the bones of Man on Fire before, probably several times over. A burnt-out, hard-drinking former operative reluctantly takes a job protecting a young girl; they clash, they bond, she is snatched, and he sets about a merciless campaign to get her back. It is the

The scariest thing in Pulse is almost never the thing you are actually looking at. That is the film's central trick, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa pulls it off with a quiet, devastating patience that most horror directors would struggle to match even once, let alone sustain across a full

There's a quiet melancholy beneath the surface of Lilo & Stitch that I wasn't quite expecting when I first sat down with it, and it's that melancholy that lingers long after the credits roll. Not the big, showy emotional beats that Disney tends to

That corridor. You already know the one I mean. If you've seen Oldboy, it's probably the first image that flashes into your head. One man, a hammer, and a hallway absolutely packed with people who want him dead. No wirework, no quick cuts to spare anyone&

There is something a little strange about rating a thirteen-minute short film the same way you would rate a feature. What are you even measuring? Hotel Chevalier runs barely long enough to justify making a cup of tea, and yet here I am, genuinely glad I spent time with

There are films you would never stumble upon in a hundred years without actively going looking, and Sea and the Jungle is absolutely one of them. A fifty-two-minute documentary from São Tomé and Príncipe, a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea whose entire cinematic output would

There is a version of cinema that asks you to slow down, to breathe, to let images and language wash over you without the usual apparatus of plot or performance. I understand that. I have even enjoyed it. But there is another version, rarer and less forgiving, that asks all

There is a moment early in Sexy Beast where Gal Dove, retired safecracker, is dozing by his swimming pool in the Spanish sunshine, the very picture of a man who has successfully left his old life behind, and you think: this is going to be a pleasant little film about

(500) Days of Summer opens by telling you, in as many words, that it is "not a love story, but a story about love." That is true, as far as it goes, but I would argue the framing is still a little off: this is a story about

On paper, a silent, hour-long film about the life cycle of a container ship, built, sailed and eventually scrapped, sounds like a hard sell. And, well, it is. Peter Hutton's At Sea follows a freighter from construction to dismantling in long, static, wordless shots. I will admit
