American cinema stretches from the silent comedies of Buster Keaton, The Cameraman among them, through to the sharp, funny indie work of films like Booksmart. It's a tradition wide enough to hold big-studio spectacle, low-budget horror, and everything in between. Browse Macca's reviews below.

There's a moment in Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives where a man sits at a dinner table making polite conversation with the ghost of his dead wife and the glowing-eyed spirit of his long-lost son, and everyone just... gets on with it. No

Where do you even begin? That's the question I kept asking myself as the credits rolled on All That's Left of You, and I still don't have a clean answer. What I do have is the feeling of something sitting heavy in my chest,

Let me paint you a picture. You sit down for a film challenge, press play on what you think is the first entry in a franchise, and spend the next ninety minutes slowly realising something is very, very wrong. The story feels like it's referencing events you never

Some films are bad in an interesting way. Max Havoc: Curse of the Dragon is not one of them. It's bad in the way a damp Tuesday afternoon is bad: no drama, no spectacle, just a grey stretch of time you'll never get back. I watched

Let me be upfront about something: I never quite clicked with Fury Road. I know that puts me in a minority, and I know the reaction I get when I say it. But it's true. I found it relentless in a way that felt exhausting rather than exhilarating,

Let me be honest with you: I went into Mad Max: Fury Road fully expecting to join the chorus of rapturous praise. The reputation precedes it like a shockwave. And yet, somewhere in the middle of its relentless, thundering two hours, I found myself not thrilled, but exhausted. Not dazzled,

When Gareth Evans and Iko Uwais unleashed The Raid on the world in 2011, the response was somewhere between astonishment and mild disbelief. A Welsh director working in Indonesia with a relatively modest budget had produced one of the most viscerally efficient action films in years, a single-location siege

There's a certain kind of horror film that doesn't make you angry, doesn't make you scared, doesn't even make you laugh. It just sits there, on your screen, doing roughly the right things in roughly the right order, and then it ends.

There's a genuinely fascinating film buried somewhere inside The Serpent and the Rainbow. A story about Vodou as a real instrument of political terror, about a powder that might actually simulate death, about the way colonial power structures exploit spiritual traditions for their own brutal ends. That'

There's a version of She Paradise that I think would have been genuinely special. You can feel it in the bones of the thing, in its colours and its music and above all in the young woman at its centre. Director Maya Cozier clearly has a gift for
