"Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" Honestly, yeah. I just watched what is arguably one of the greatest cop films ever put to celluloid, and I came out the other side buzzing. That line has been quoted, parodied and imitated so many times over the decades

First Zone was one of the films I was most curious about at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival, and it did not disappoint. Thom Lunshof's debut feature imagines the Netherlands almost entirely underwater, a drowned country crossed by boat by a lone woman in search

We are absolutely saturated with cinema set in Afghanistan. From the Soviet invasion to the endless, grinding War on Terror, the country has frequently served as a backdrop for foreign filmmakers looking to capture geopolitical conflict. There is something almost reflexive about it now, the way Western productions reach for

I want to be fair here, I genuinely do. Oman doesn't have a deep or sprawling cinema history, so the fact that this fifteen-minute short by Anirban Ray is considered one of the most popular films from the nation isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of

There are films that entertain you, and then there are films that practically reach through the screen and squeeze the joy right out of your chest. John Hillcoat's adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road is firmly, unapologetically in the latter category. I don't mean

Let's get the "female Superbad" label out of the way right now, because it's both accurate and reductive in equal measure. Yes, Bottoms absolutely belongs in that specific, highly coveted corner of chaotic, hormone-fuelled teen cinema alongside the likes of Booksmart. But the

There is a massive, glaring blind spot on the global map that most of us simply look right past. You know the kind: a place that flickers occasionally onto your radar in a news ticker, then vanishes again before you can even locate it. Iara Lee's 2015 documentary

Sometimes a film catches you completely off guard, and that's the best possible feeling. I'll be honest: a 1980s rural Slavic road trip movie wasn't exactly on my radar as essential weekend viewing. But Slobodan Šijan's Who's Singin' Over

There's a very specific, nostalgic charm to the final gasps of traditional 2D animation at Disney, right before the studio completely surrendered to the CGI takeover. Something bittersweet hangs over these late entries in the hand-drawn era, a sense that you're watching a craft at

I'll be honest with you: silent cinema and I have never been the best of mates. Too often I find the pacing drags, and the absence of dialogue puts up a wall between me and genuine emotional engagement. That said, there are certain names that demand your respect

Seventy million dollars. For sixteen minutes. Let that sink in for a moment. The Audition, Martin Scorsese's 2015 short film, was reportedly bankrolled by Macau casino groups to that frankly staggering sum, and when you first hear that figure, your brain does a little somersault. But then the

There's a specific, sun-drenched haze to Bruce Robinson's adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary, and unfortunately it mostly just obscures a deeply average film. You sit there watching the warm Puerto Rican light bounce off rum bottles and white beaches, and
