'Aho'eitu (2015)
★★★ — 'Aho'eitu (2015)
A short film produced under the Malosi Pictures banner, 'Aho'eitu is a New Zealand-Tongan co-production directed by the duo Jeremiah Tauamiti and Vea Mafile'o, both figures in the Pacific Island filmmaking community that has grown steadily out of Auckland since the 2000s. The film adapts one of Tonga's most significant origin myths, the legend of 'Aho'eitu, whose story explains the lineage of the Tu'i Tonga, the island nation's first royal dynasty. At just 27 minutes, it sits within a broader movement of short-form indigenous storytelling from the Pacific, where limited budgets and small crews have produced work with genuine cultural weight, bringing oral traditions to screen in te reo Tonga with an authenticity that bigger productions rarely manage.
A-Z World Movie Tour Tonga FIRST REVIEW ON LETTERBOXD https://youtu.be/J-8sVgdvkbw?si=ol0zhDTjKJCd_u1j This short movie was actually really well made. I loved the cinematography. I really enjoyed learning more about another aspect of Polynesian culture. It felt alot like the Disney movie Hercules. The son of a god goes to find his Father and earn his respect. The soundtrack was great to accompany this and overall I thought it was a good little low-budget short.
