Family cinema, at its best, refuses to talk down to anyone in the room. Films like Spirited Away and Song of the Sea handle grief, wonder and belonging with more honesty than most adult dramas dare to. Browse Macca's reviews below and find something worth watching together.

It remains a genuine puzzle to me why Brother Bear has become one of the more forgotten corners of the Disney vault. Ask most people to rattle off their favourite films from the studio's catalogue and they'll jump straight from the Renaissance peak of the mid-

There's a moment in The Secret of NIMH where you catch yourself leaning forward, genuinely unsettled, and then you remember this is supposed to be a Saturday afternoon film for kids. That tension, that slight discomfort at how dark and serious everything feels, is really the whole story

I've heard the names Asterix and Obelix my entire life. They are an unavoidable pillar of European pop culture, even if their footprint has shrunk a bit here in the UK in recent years. Endless merchandise, cultural osmosis, playground references. Yet, somehow, René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo'

There's a version of The Red Turtle that I think I could love. The version that exists purely as a sequence of images, a moving watercolour book you'd leave open on a coffee table and let wash over you. Michael Dudok de Wit has made something

Press play on Tomm Moore's 2009 animated feature and within seconds you're struck dumb by how gorgeous it all is. The vibrant colours, the geometric, illuminated-manuscript art style, the sheer fluidity of the movement across the screen. It's a genuine visual feast, and

There's a very specific, nostalgic charm to the final gasps of traditional 2D animation at Disney, right before the studio completely surrendered to the CGI takeover. Something bittersweet hangs over these late entries in the hand-drawn era, a sense that you're watching a craft at

I still maintain that the 1979 The Muppet Movie is a near-masterpiece of joy, and I'd happily extend that warmth to The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island as solid, fun detours in the same spirit. So when James Bobin's 2011 reboot landed, I

There's something almost rebellious about how unashamed A Boy Named Charlie Brown is of its own age. Press play and within seconds you're confronted with scratchy lines, flat colours, and character movements that creak along with a kind of charming stiffness. This is nearly sixty years

When a film sits in Letterboxd's top 250 animations of all time, you go in expecting something. A hidden gem, maybe. A stroke of forgotten genius that somehow slipped past you in childhood. So I finally ticked off Kevin Lima's A Goofy Movie, fully prepared to

There's a very specific kind of tired that sets in when you're watching a film and you realise, about fifteen minutes in, that absolutely nothing surprising is going to happen. That's the feeling that settled over me watching Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the

There are few cinematic experiences as universally scarring as sitting down with a bucket of popcorn, only to have your childhood innocence absolutely shattered by a woodland creature. I still remember the collective, stunned silence in the room the first time I watched Bambi. Not a word. Not a sound.

My kids are going through a full-on Pokémon phase at the moment, which means every spare evening involves trading cards, video games, and, apparently, me sitting down to rewatch things I probably should have left well alone. That's how I ended up revisiting Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo
