Comedy at its best does more than raise a laugh: Billy Wilder proved as much with The Apartment, a film that wrings genuine heartache from office farce without losing its wit for a second. The genre rewards close attention, and Macca's reviews treat it with exactly that. Browse the collection below.

The most compelling story attached to Hollywood Shuffle isn't actually on the screen, and I mean that as a genuine compliment to Robert Townsend rather than a criticism of the film itself. Back in 1987, so fed up with an industry that kept slamming doors in his face,

Let me be honest with you: I only watched White Chicks to tick a box. Specifically, a box on the Letterboxd list "Top 250 Most Fans", which meant sitting through Keenen Ivory Wayans's 2004 comedy purely in the name of completionism. I have nobody to blame

There's a particular kind of dread that comes with revisiting a film you loved as a teenager. You build it up over the years, smooth out its rough edges in memory, and then sit down to watch it again with the nagging suspicion that you're about

I could not have gone into Queens of the Dead wanting to like it more. George A. Romero is one of my most-watched directors, full stop, and his Day of the Dead remains the only horror film I have ever handed a full five stars. So when I learned

There's a very specific, visceral thump to the soundtrack of mid90s that hit me somewhere deep in the chest the moment it started. I was a skater kid growing up in the UK, and those tracks, that particular blend of hip hop and noise rock bleeding from a

There is a very specific, almost hypnotic rhythm to a Wes Anderson picture. Whether you're watching The Grand Budapest Hotel or Fantastic Mr. Fox, you get this peculiar sensation that absolutely nothing is happening, even while the screen is bursting with meticulously choreographed activity. Characters drift through immaculately

There's a version of Idiocracy that works brilliantly. A savage, formally rigorous takedown of anti-intellectualism, commercialisation and the slow rot of public life. The bones of that film are here. Mike Judge clearly has something to say, and in the years since its release, a lot of

There's a moment about halfway through Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when my son got up, wandered out of the room, and didn't come back for a while. He's the target audience. He loves these films. And when a Sonic movie loses the child in

For years "video game movie" was basically a warning label, shorthand for something cynical and half-watchable. You knew what you were getting: a production that understood the intellectual property well enough to put the right colours on screen, but had no real feel for why anyone loved

Let's get the heresy out of the way immediately: I have never quite understood the rabid, unquestioning devotion to Sam Raimi's Evil Dead franchise. While the world collectively worships at the altar of cabin-in-the-woods terror, I've found myself consistently underwhelmed by

My son has watched plenty of things once and forgotten them by teatime. The Highway Rat was not one of them. He came out of it obsessed, quoting the thing for weeks afterward, and honestly that's about the highest praise a half-hour film for small children can

There's a moment in Scary Movie 2 where you can almost feel the production running out of ideas in real time. The jokes don't build, they just pile up, louder and cruder and more desperate with each passing minute, as if sheer volume might convince you
