Cinema in the 2020s has been defined by disruption: streaming upended theatrical habits, the pandemic forced a rethink of what a film release even means, and audiences have increasingly embraced subtitled films like How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies alongside big animation and documentary work. Macca's reviews from the decade reflect that breadth. Browse what he's made of it below.

I went into Dahomey completely blind, and the subject matter alone was enough to get me genuinely excited. The repatriation of 26 royal artefacts from France back to Benin, some 130 years after they were looted during colonial conquest. That's a story with real weight behind it, the

You can pile all the shiny, high-budget sprinkles you want on top of a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but at the end of the day it's still just prettier vanilla ice cream. That's essentially where I land on Avatar: The Way of Water, James

There's a particular kind of viewing experience that comes with hunting down films from nations with barely a handful of titles to their name. You're not approaching it the way you'd approach a new thriller from a country with a rich cinematic tradition. You&

When you're told a ten-minute horror short is supposedly one of the most popular films ever to come out of the Seychelles, you go in expecting something. Anything. A jolt of atmosphere, a moment of genuine dread, a creature that actually gets to do something. What I

There is a very specific, fascinating subgenre of cinema that blurs the line between documentary and performance, using real-life trauma as a vehicle for on-screen catharsis. I've sat through a fair few of these over the years. Think Salaam Cinema, or films like 1001 Frames, where

There's a very specific kind of charm to the old Toho kaiju pictures, those gloriously clunky, rubber-suited monsters stomping through miniature Tokyo streetscapes. Films like Space Amoeba radiate genuine effort and earnestness from every frame, and even when they're objectively daft, you find yourself rooting

There's an early, sweeping aerial shot in this 2024 documentary that stops you cold. A brown, elegant shape glides effortlessly through the thick seaweeds of the Shetland coast, and it looks absolutely stunning. For a moment, I found myself bracing for the usual modern wildlife documentary catch: is

I was there for the original cartoon. I wore out the VHS of the 1987 film so many times the tracking lines practically became part of the aesthetic. So going into Travis Knight's 2026 live-action Masters of the Universe, I was hesitantly hopeful, clinging to the faint

Let me be honest with you: I walked into Project Hail Mary fully prepared to be disappointed. The early critic chatter was dominated by how "cute" and "funny" Ryan Gosling's companion was, and that framing had me bracing for some kind of cosmic Disney

There is something profoundly absurd about standing before the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Colosseum, or the Louvre, monuments that have survived millennia of human history, only to watch hundreds of people experience them exclusively through the glowing rectangle of a smartphone on a selfie stick. It is one of

If you've seen one supernatural slasher, you've essentially seen them all, and Whistle is unlikely to change your mind on that front. Corin Hardy's 2025 picture feels like someone took the Rube Goldberg mortality mechanics of Final Destination, mashed them up with the urban
