Western Saharan cinema is among the rarest on earth, emerging from a territory whose political status remains disputed and whose population is largely in exile or refugee camps. The Sahrawi film scene, nurtured partly through the Fisahara festival held in the Algerian desert camps, reflects a people telling their own story against considerable odds.

I have a real soft spot for films from Western Sahara, one of the rarest and most politically charged corners of world cinema, so I came to Wallace Minchong Li's Between Us and the World keen to like it. And there is a good deal to admire here,
