I'll be honest with you: silent cinema and I have never been the best of mates. Too often I find the pacing drags, and the absence of dialogue puts up a wall between me and genuine emotional engagement. That said, there are certain names that demand your respect

There's a moment in The Cameraman where Buster Keaton shares a tiny changing cubicle with a large stranger, and the two men contort themselves into increasingly impossible arrangements trying to get dressed without making eye contact. It's brilliantly choreographed, genuinely funny, and over in about ninety
