American cinema stretches from the silent comedies of Buster Keaton, The Cameraman among them, through to the sharp, funny indie work of films like Booksmart. It's a tradition wide enough to hold big-studio spectacle, low-budget horror, and everything in between. Browse Macca's reviews below.

It took me watching two separate Andrew Garfield-led Spider-Man films to suddenly realise that the director's surname is Webb. I found that delayed epiphany significantly more amusing than anything that actually happens on screen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. When a sequel leaves you more

Let's get one thing straight: It's a Wonderful Life is not the cosy, feel-good Christmas card its reputation suggests. I went in half-expecting warm cocoa and sleigh bells, and what I got was something far more unsettling, and far more impressive, than that. The

Ten films deep into a director's back catalogue and you start to think you know what you're getting. With George A. Romero, I thought I had a reasonable handle on it: sharp social commentary wrapped in viscera, monsters as metaphor, chaos as critique. Then I sat

Let's talk about practical effects, because if any film makes the case for them over weightless, pixelated CGI, it's this one. The Fly is the gold standard of body horror, and the reason it works so ferociously well comes down to latex, foam, and fake blood

There is a very specific point where a beloved sci-fi franchise stops being a sharp, satirical triumph and simply devolves into a corporate cash grab. RoboCop 3 is that exact point, and I say that as someone who genuinely loves the original and has a soft spot for the

I'll be honest: seeing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sitting at a higher rating than its predecessor on Letterboxd left me genuinely baffled. Not angry, not defensive, just... baffled. Because while this 2023 sequel is an extraordinary piece of work in several respects, I came out of

I am rarely one to sing the praises of the modern superhero industrial complex. You probably know this about me by now. Outside of the original X-Men trilogy and The Dark Knight, I've almost never handed out a score higher than average to a cape-and-cowl

I still have a vivid memory of standing in the school playground, clutching a plastic RoboCop action figure, completely oblivious to the razor-sharp, deeply inappropriate satire I was holding in my eight-year-old hands. That memory says everything about the strange cultural place these films occupy. They were

There is something undeniably arresting about watching a teenager narrate her own messy, chaotic awakening into a clunky 1970s dictaphone while sketching comic books. It pulled me in immediately, and for a while I thought I was watching something genuinely special. By the end, I was left with something more

There is a very specific, giddy thrill in watching Frank Darabont's creature feature The Mist and playing "spot the future television star" before they actually became famous. If you're a fan of the first season of The Walking Dead (which, funnily enough, Darabont also

Some films arrive with a completely unexpected key that unlocks them. I pressed play on Monkey Shines expecting a reasonably straightforward 80s horror thriller, and about twenty minutes in, I had one of those bizarre pop-culture lightbulb moments that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. This is the exact

Sometimes going in completely blind is the best thing you can do for yourself. I had a poster in my head: Julia Roberts, a baby, what looked like a quiet family drama. Maybe a character study. Something gentle. What I actually got was a fiercely compelling, true-life legal thriller
