They Cloned Tyrone announces itself as one of those films that refuses to sit still in a single genre, and for a good while that is exactly what makes it such fun. Juel Taylor's debut opens as an atmospheric, darkly comic crime picture set in a rundown neighbourhood,

Not so long ago I sat through a zombie comedy that was so busy cracking jokes it forgot zombies were supposed to be scary. That film left me cold. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is the direct antidote to that problem, and a neat little lesson in getting the

Imagine Léon: The Professional with every last scrap of warmth surgically removed, and you are somewhere close to You Were Never Really Here. Both films pair a haunted hired killer with a young girl he is trying to save, but where Léon finds an unlikely tenderness in that bond, Lynne

Before Yorgos Lanthimos became an awards-season fixture with the likes of The Favourite and Poor Things, he made this, and what strikes you immediately is how fully formed his sensibility already was. The flat, deadpan strangeness, the refusal to wink at the audience, the sense that horror and absurdity

I will admit to coming at Over/Under from a particular angle. I have a twelve year old daughter, and Sophia Silver's coming of age drama captures so much of what I see in her life right now, the shifting friendships, the first brushes with puberty, the endless

Let's talk about the sheer, unadulterated audacity of what David Lean pulled off with this one. There's a scene early in Top of the Heap that sets out exactly what kind of film you're in for. George Lattimer, a Black police officer in early-seventies America, is caught between two worlds and welcome in neither. His colleagues on the force make his

For years "video game movie" was basically a warning label, shorthand for something cynical and half-watchable. You knew what you were getting: a production that understood the intellectual property well enough to put the right colours on screen, but had no real feel for why anyone loved
