Piccolo Piccolo, Marta Gennari's animated short film, is a small and charming thing that knows exactly how small and charming it is, and gets by very happily on that. I caught it at the BFI London Film Festival, and while it is slight by any measure, its lovely

There is a particular kind of pleasure in watching stop-motion animation done really well, the knowledge that every single frame of what you are seeing was built, lit and nudged into place by hand, and Sphinx Alberta's Smile, Dace Riduze and Janis Cimmermanis's short film,

After a run of pleasant but forgettable animated shorts in the festival's younger-audiences strand, Loulou was the one that actually got to me. Hanneke van der Linden's short film is a tender, delicately made little thing about grief, and it manages that rarest of tricks,

Grounded, Chris Callus's animated short film, is a perfectly nice little thing that I struggled to feel much about one way or the other. I caught it at the BFI London Film Festival, and it is pleasant, harmless and competently made, which is also just about all I

There is nothing at all wrong with Bats & Bugs, Lena von Döhren's animated short film, and I think that is rather the problem. I caught it at the BFI London Film Festival and found it a perfectly pleasant, nicely drawn little thing that simply never gave me

Every so often a short film comes along that is so beautiful to look at that the usual criteria start to feel almost beside the point, and Into the Forest, Antonin Niclass's stop-motion short film, is one of those. I watched it at the BFI London Film

You have to admire a film that can take an idea this daft and make you feel something with it. Adrian Maganza's Fantasies of a Rescue Dummy is one of the more genuinely original shorts I have come across, a hybrid of live action and animation that asks

Craft can carry a film a surprisingly long way, and Aisha Boudjillouli's Eyeliner is a good test of exactly how far. This NFTS stop-motion short is, on a technical level, genuinely lovely, beautifully animated and well voiced, and it is tackling a tender subject with obvious sincerity.
Country Armenia
There is a lot to enjoy in Wow, A Talking Fish!, though I have to be upfront: I was let down by the screener rather than the film. Robert Sahakyants' short is a surreal, sharp-edged bit of Soviet-era animation with terrific voice work, but the copy I

Hey, You is a feast for the eyes. Péter Szoboszlay's Hungarian short is one of those pieces where you could pause on almost any frame and happily hang it on the wall, and while it is not fine-art realism, for its time and its means it is
