Remembering Peter Cullen (1941-2026)
Remembering Peter Cullen: the films of theirs I've reviewed, and a few words on the work.
Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor whose distinctive baritone became synonymous with some of popular culture's most enduring animated characters, has died at the age of 85. His passing on 26 August 2026 marks the end of a career that spanned more than five decades and touched multiple generations of viewers across film, television, and beyond.
Cullen's voice was instantly recognisable, a warm yet commanding instrument that seemed perfectly calibrated for the characters he inhabited. He was best known for lending his voice to Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, a role that defined much of his later career and introduced him to audiences who might never have encountered his earlier work. But his range was considerable: he brought tenderness and wisdom to Winnie the Pooh, contributed to the scrappy energy of Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers, and worked across countless television series and animated productions. His ability to convey character through voice alone, without the support of facial expression or physical movement, spoke to a particular mastery of his craft. Cullen understood that voice acting was not simply reading lines, but inhabiting a character so completely that listeners forgot they were hearing a performance at all.
Films I've reviewed:
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) ★★½
- Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) ★★
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) ★★
The work of a voice actor often goes undervalued in discussions of performance, overshadowed by more visible forms of acting. Yet Cullen's legacy rests on something fundamental: the voices he created became the voices those characters will always have in the minds of those who grew up with them. That permanence, that intimate bond between performer and audience, is perhaps the truest mark of a career well spent. Peter Cullen leaves behind not just films and television programmes, but a catalogue of characters that will continue to speak to audiences for years to come.
